HL7 and FHIR: An Overview of Health Data Standards
1 dk okumahbys.pro Editör Ekibi30 Mart 2026
For health systems to share data with each other, a common language is needed. In this article, we compare two common standards, HL7 and FHIR, in simple terms.
What is HL7?
HL7 is a well-established family of standards developed for data exchange between health information systems. It has been widely used for a long time.
What is FHIR?
FHIR is a more modern, web-based, and modular approach to data sharing. Its flexible structure aims to facilitate new integrations.
When to use which?
| Title | HL7 | FHIR |
|---|---|---|
| Maturity | Established | Modern |
| Approach | Message-based | Resource-based |
| Flexibility | — | More flexible |
The choice is made based on the integration needs, counterpart systems, and existing infrastructure. There may also be situations where both are used together.
