Scientific and theoretical basis
Cost per patient, a fundamental cost accounting indicator, shows the average unit cost of services provided in a healthcare institution.
Formula and Logic
Cost Per Patient = Total Cost / Number of Patients
Total cost includes fixed and variable items such as personnel, medication/supplies, overhead, and depreciation. When divided by the number of patients, the average unit cost is found.
How is it interpreted?
This indicator provides input for pricing, budgeting, and department-based profitability analyses. However, since it is an average value, it may underestimate the actual cost in units with a high volume of severe cases.
Considerations
For a meaningful result, costs must be accurately allocated to units and services. Hospital cost analysis and correct data quality determine the reliability of the result.
